É impossível falar em Portugal e não lembrar a revolução que fez cair a ditadura salazarista há cinco décadas atrás.
Este acontecimento histórico, tão importante para os portugueses, ficou conhecido como a Revolução dos Cravos, mas existem também outros golpes militares com nome de flores.
A Tunísia viu a Revolução Jasmim, enquanto que o Egito foi o palco da Revolução Lótus. Contudo, a primeira revolução com nome de flor foi a portuguesa, em 1974.

A origem da associação do cravo vermelho ao final da ditadura conta com várias teorias: alguns dizem que foram oferendas de uma loja que ia abrir no dia 25 de abril, mas que permaneceu fechada por causa do reboliço; outros argumentam que foi uma menina que distribuiu as flores pelos soldados que estavam na rua.
A razão por detrás deste ícone, contudo, não é importante – o que ficou para a história foram os relatos de uma revolução pacífica e sem qualquer sangue derramado.
Segundo alguns, a cor escarlate representa este fato!
Este ano 2024 marca os 50 anos de um Portugal mais livre, democrático e tolerante.
Apesar de muitos portugueses ainda guardarem na memória muito sofrimento e rigidez proveniente do governo dessa altura, não há dúvida que o país mudou para melhor.

25th April and the revolution named after a flower
One cannot talk about Portugal and not mention the revolution that caused the demise of Salazar’s dictatorship five decades ago.
This historical event, one that is of utmost importance to the Portuguese, became known as the “Carnation Revolution”, but there are also other military takeovers named after flowers.
Tunisia had the “Jasmine Revolution”, while Egypt had the “Lotus” one. However, the original “floral denomination” was our very own coup.
How carnations become associated with the revolution is not certain.
While some say they were part of a shop opening in Lisbon, others state that a young girl donated them to soldiers patrolling the streets.
The reason behind this link is not pressing, though – what is truly remarkable is the fact that the day started and ended with no signs of bloodshed. Some even say that this is what the scarlet colour represents!
2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the revolution, one that turned Portugal into a free, democratic and tolerant country.
Even though many people still remember the horrors suffered at the hands of the then government, it is clear that the country has changed for the better.
